Juniper Goldman awoke early. It was not even 6:00 am and she was wide awake. She looked over to the other side of the bed. There lay her best friend, Terry Bingham. This morning was different though. For the last year they had been sharing the bed as just friends, but now they were a couple. They had decided last night that they truly loved each other and would work to make what was a wonderful friendship into what could be an incredible relationship.
They had talked about many different things, not the least of which was Juni's physical condition. Today she was strong, powerful, and incredibly beautiful, but within the next year, who knew what would happen? Terry had confided in her that her body would start breaking down this year. They had discovered, together, that there may be a way to save her, but it would take investigative skills to find that one sample, that one piece of the puzzle that had surely survived the explosion.
Juni leaned over and gently kissed her lover on the cheek. She raised her arms over her head and stretched, getting the muscles and ligaments to start warming up. She stood up, very naked, and walked over to the closet. Her outfit was there, right where Terry always hung it up. She took it off the hanger and threw it on her side of the bed. She then walked over to the dresser and pulled out the top drawer. She selected a nice lacy pantie and stepped into it, feeling the soft fabric run over her thighs, then glutes, to finally rest on her hips. She turned around and grabbed her outfit off the bed. Stepping into it and then shrugging into the arms, she pulled it up onto her shoulders. She reached down for the zipper and pulled it up, stopping just above her belly button. "Always need the 'ladies' to be in view." She thought, "Amazing how much of an advantage that gives me, even for just a second or two."
Juni turned back to the dresser and pulled out her accessories: her belts and diamond mask. She put the belts on around her hips and fastened them to the round buckle in front. She then left the room and walked to the bathroom. She found her brush on the sink counter and got to work on her hair. After getting all the knots out she tied it back with her red hairband. She then opened the medicine cabinet and got out the spirit gum. This she applied around her eyes and on her cheeks. Once she was done, she placed the blue mask on her face, pressing a bit to make sure it held tightly.
Juniper left the bathroom, walked past the bedroom and across the short balcony, that overlooked the living room, to the circular staircase. Once down she headed for the terrace doors. Her boots and shield were right where she left them. Pushing her feet into the boots was not an issue as Yoyodyne had created some excellent footwear for her. The crowning achievement though was the shield. She had yet to come up against anything currently on the streets that could so much as mar its surface. It was painted in the colors of her country with a large stylized bald eagle, in red, on the surface. She slipped this on to her left arm, leaving the right for punching and holding.
As she walked outside, she made a mental shift. Juniper Goldman, the fashion designer, was not needed at this moment. This was the time for her alter ego, the hero she had always wanted to be. As she lept into the air, over the glass railing and headed towards the street below, the shift was complete. Major Renown, one of the famed Guardians of Angel Falls, was on the beat. Nothing was going to stand in her way of finding what could save her. She would make sure that Terry had someone to love for many years to come....
